Authorities in Mashonaland Central are preparing for an influx of more than 100,000 attendees in Mvurwi for this year’s Munhumutapa Day, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa will officially unveil a major youth housing initiative. The scheme, covering 259 hectares, is set to provide residential stands and housing opportunities specifically for young people in the province.
The launch is scheduled as a highlight of the national holiday, which honours the legacy of the Munhumutapa empire and its role in shaping Zimbabwe’s identity. Provincial officials say the project is part of broader government efforts to empower youths through access to land and home ownership, addressing a long-standing demand for affordable housing.
Munhumutapa Day, proclaimed for September 15, has become a platform for rolling out developmental projects that resonate with the country’s Vision 2030 goals. The youth housing scheme in Mvurwi is expected to be replicated in other provinces as the government accelerates its housing delivery programme, with beneficiaries drawn from local communities and youth organisations.
Preparations in Mvurwi are in full swing, with temporary infrastructure being set up to accommodate the large crowd. President Mnangagwa is also expected to address the nation on the significance of the day, linking historical pride to contemporary economic empowerment initiatives.
