Martin Muduva, a commissioner with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), has died after a brutal domestic incident at his home in Dzivarasekwa Extension, Harare. Police are treating the case as a murder-suicide.

According to police, Muduva and his wife had a heated argument on Tuesday night. The dispute escalated, and the wife allegedly attacked Muduva with an axe, striking him twice. He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. The wife reportedly drank poison shortly after the attack and died before the night ended.

The ZHRC released a statement expressing shock and sadness: ‘The death of commissioner Muduva is a devastating loss to the commission and to all those who had the privilege of working with him.’

Family sources revealed that Muduva had recently taken a second wife, which caused tension in his household. Police have not yet released a full statement but confirmed investigations are ongoing.

Muduva, an electrical engineer by training, was appointed to the ZHRC on December 19, 2024. He held multiple degrees, including a DPhil in data science, an MSc in mechatronics and artificial intelligence, and an MSc in big data analytics. He also lectured at Midlands State University and served as a technology risk and assurance consultant. His expertise in ICT, cybersecurity, and digital transformation made him a key figure in advancing digital innovation across the region.
